HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss football team got in its final workout here Friday at the Joe P. Park Practice Facility before the team's scheduled first full scrimmage of training camp.
After nine practices over the first eight days of camp, the Golden Eagles will switch gears Saturday as the team will hold its first full scrimmage. The scrimmage gives the coaching staff a chance to evaluate players in game-like situations, as playing time decisions continue to be made for the upcoming year. The scrimmage is closed to both the media and general public.
On Friday, the Golden Eagles worked for about 2 hours, 45 minutes in full pads during the morning practice. The practice began an hour later, giving the players some extra rest following the team's first two-a-day practices the previous day.
While Southern Miss endured hot temperatures for the eighth-straight day, the squad enjoyed occasional periods of scattered clouds for the first time since practice began last Friday, which helped keep things somewhat cooler for portions of the practice.
First-year Southern Miss coach Todd Monken said his squad is looking forward to its first scrimmage of training camp as they continue to prepare for its opening game at home against Texas State, Aug. 31.
