HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss football team went through its first of four scheduled two-a-day practice days during training camp here Thursday on the Golden Eagle campus.
The Golden Eagles condensed their morning practice by about 15 minutes, going just over two and a half hours in full pads, while coming back with an hour and a half evening in shorts during the late workout.
The two practices ended the first week of camp for the Golden Eagles and first-year coach Todd Monken continued to praise the effort of his squad in their preparation for the 2013 season including their Aug. 31, season opener against Texas State at Carlisle-Faulkner Field at Roberts Stadium.
"It's awfully hot and our guys are trying to push through and they are doing a good job doing with that," said Monken. "Like I said yesterday, we won't win because of schemes. We will win because we are mentally tough, we fight like heck and we play for each other. That's how we will win."
With eight practices in the books over the first week, Monken added that the team's intensity has gotten better.
"You don't really know until you look at the film, but I think we are making improvements," said Monken. "You only get better with reps and that is the hardest part about not having them in the summer."
Monken also praised the defense for their work on the practice field over the squad's first week of practice.
"They have been doing a great job of stripping and getting the ball on the ground," said Monken. "That's how you win games, not turning the ball over and getting turnovers and they have been doing a great job." The Golden Eagles return to the practice fields Friday morning.
