HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Lightning and rain thwarted plans for the Southern Miss football team to get a pair of practices in on Wednesday, so the team pushed back its first two-a-day schedule of fall camp to Thursday.

After having its first evening practice washed out on Wednesday, the squad was able to get through its 1 ½ hour scheduled afternoon workout on Thursday, albeit three-plus hours earlier than they originally scheduled it to beat the rain.

Still, the rains came in the afternoon but the inclement weather did not disrupt the Golden Eagles as they also practiced for over two hours in the morning session. Both practices were conducted in full pads.

Now with eight practices under their belt, Southern Miss will have one more practice Friday morning before having its first intrasquad scrimmage on Saturday.

"Hopefully, we'll try to have a real extended scrimmage," said Johnson. "We're going to try to move it up to the hotter part of the day and scrimmage for about two hours."

Johnson also said after the second practice on Thursday that the offensive line continues to get better each practice and that they are gradually making the adjustments to the new scheme.

"I think [the offensive line] has improved on the things we have changed," added Johnson. "They were not used to doing any pull schemes; some of our double team schemes were a little bit different for them. They are starting to pick all that up now as there's a lot of footwork involved in that. The timing on it is getting better and better with execution in the backfield."

The Golden Eagles begin the season Sept. 1, at Nebraska.
