HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss football team returned to the practice field for the fifth day of fall camp, but things were a little different at the Joe P. Park Practice Facility Tuesday morning.
In a practice that ran almost three hours, the Golden Eagles donned full pads for the first time during camp and it was Southern Miss coach Todd Monken who had to balance a fine line with the amount of contact his team took in its first day in full gear.
"You have to go a little bit," said Monken, on his team's approach to contact during the first day of full pads. "It is always hard, though. It is a contact sport and you have to go live for some of it, you have to hit and you going to get some guys banged up, and that is just part of it."
Monken added that the team has seen improvement over their first five days of drills and that despite the limited amount of time that he has had with the team, they continue to better themselves in preparation for the Aug. 31 season opener at home against Texas State.
"We have to remind ourselves that we have only had 15 spring practices," said Monken. "We had the summer to work on it, but you realize there is only so much your players can do by themselves. So that is why we coach them. You realize how important that summer is to already been through a full year, so we are playing catch up but we are doing fine."
The Golden Eagles return to practice Wednesday morning in full pads.
