New Week of Fall Camp Starts for Golden Eagle Football
In a workout that went two hours, 45 minutes under sunny skies in helmets and shoulder pads at the Joe P. Park Practice Facility, Monken said the team must continually push itself to do more than they did the previous day.
"(Practice) was better today than yesterday," said Monken. "We are just building. Our guys are trying to figure out, `I never know how far I can push myself until I push myself to the brink of exhaustion. And then the next day, I can go a bit further. If I push myself to exhaustion then I know that the next day I can probably go a little further.' Our guys did a better job with that today of how do I push myself to the point of exhaustion and just keep building."
Another thing that happens when camp gets deeper into its practice sessions is the constant shuffling of the team's depth chart. The movement allows the coaching staff the opportunity to see if they made the right moves with the competing of the individuals that got moved around.
"Sometimes you just settle in and put it on cruise control (when you are at the top of the depth chart)," said Monken. "When you move guys around on the depth chart you see, `am I going to fight? Does it matter enough to compete? Do I care enough to want to play?' Then you kind of see it. If you don't, then you made the right decision. If you move a guy down the depth chart and they don't compete, you've made the right decision."
"Both are really good football players and we have them in the right spot," said Monken. "They both love to play football. I don't know if there is much difference. Bertucci has awareness. Justin has speed and he'll hit you. Both of them have had great summers and are deserving of playing time."
The Golden Eagles return to the practice fields on Tuesday when they go through their fifth workout of fall camp. Practice will start at 8 a.m.
