Home Game Themes Announced for 2014 Southern Miss Football
The schedule includes six home games this fall.
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss Department of Athletics announced Thursday the game themes for its six Golden Eagle home games this fall, which includes the defending C-USA champion, the league's defending runner-up and a former three-time national champion at the Football Championship Subdivision level, at Carlisle-Faulkner Field at Roberts Stadium.
The Golden Eagles open the 2014 home schedule on Saturday, Sept. 6, against in-state foe Alcorn State, and the game will start at 6 p.m., at The Rock. The department will celebrate the 15th anniversary of the 1999 Conference USA championship football team which also won the Liberty Bowl that season by inviting that squad back and recognizing them during the game.
In addition, there will be fireworks for the opening game as well as performances by the Southern Miss and Alcorn State bands.
Southern Miss then entertains Appalachian State, which won three straight FCS National Championships from 2005-07 and now is in its first year at the FBS level and member of the Sun Belt Conference, in its final non-conference home game, Sept. 20. It will be M-Club Hall of Fame Weekend on campus. The annual youth cheerleading clinic, which allows youngsters the chance to learn cheers prior to the game and then perform live pre-game, will also take place that day. The Appalachian State affair also serves as All South Band Day at the stadium as well.
The Golden Eagles will then hold Ray Guy Day as well as enjoy Parent and Family Weekend for the team's C-USA home opener against Rice on Sept. 27. A special presentation to honor Guy for his recent induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame will take place during the contest. It will also be Black and Gold Recruitment Day on the Southern Miss campus. Game time is 6 p.m.
The annual BLACKOUT game is set to take place Oct. 25, against Louisiana Tech in a 2:30 p.m., contest. The school will also hold Lettermen's Day with any former football letterwinner (player, manager, trainer, cheerleader, mascot) invited back for a special day. The school's annual Eaglepalooza celebration takes place on Friday night, Oct. 24.
Southern Miss then entertains 2013 league runner-up Marshall for the school's annual homecoming game, Nov. 8, starting at 6 p.m. The school will also hold its Military Appreciation game that evening as well.
The home finale is set for Nov. 29, against UAB and it will be Senior Day at The Rock, as well as Take a Kid to the Game for free as the Golden Eagles take on the Blazers at 2:30 p.m.
