HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Athlon Sports announced Friday that three Southern Miss football players garnered Conference USA preseason all-league nods as chosen by the media outlet.
Senior linebacker Alan Howze (Ocean Springs, Miss.) garnered second-team honors, while junior defensive lineman Rakeem Nunez-Roches (Phenix City, Ala.) and junior running back Jalen Richard (Alexandria, La.) made third team.
Howze returns for his fifth season with the Golden Eagles, after missing the final eight games of 2013 due to a foot injury. In his career, he has compiled 128 career tackles (55 solo) in 41 career games to go along with 8.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, three fumble recoveries, two forced fumbles and a blocked kick.
Nunez-Roches looks poised to return in full force after missing the final 10 games last season with a foot injury. His defensive numbers include 47 career tackles (25 solos), eight tackles for loss, one sack, a forced fumble and a block in 20 games played during his Golden Eagle career.
As for Richard, he was named to the all-league squad at punt returner after tallying four returns for 67 yards last season. In addition, Richard returns as the top rusher on the Southern Miss squad with 324 yards on the ground on 85 rushes for a 3.8 per carry average. He also added 21 catches for 168 yards and a touchdown reception.
The Golden Eagles open the 2014 football campaign, Saturday, Aug. 30, at Mississippi State in a 6:30 p.m., contest.
