Football Hits the Field for Practice No. 11 on Friday
April 12, 2013
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Ahead of their second scrimmage of the 2013 spring season, Coach Todd Monken and his Golden Eagles worked through their 11th practice under perfect conditions inside the Joe P. Park Practice Facility on Friday.
For Monken, it was just another day to get better at what they do and spend more time around his players.
"We'd love to have 30 practices if we could," Monken said following practice. "Obviously, we can't do that but every time we get to be out here around our players is another opportunity to improve and just trying to do things better than everyone else in the country."
One of the particular areas of strength for the 2013 Golden Eagles will be the running backs, led by coach John Simon. Returning seniors Jeremy Hester and Kendrick Hardy have gotten considerable work over their careers, and true sophomores Jalen Richard and Tyre Bracken return a wealth of experience from their first season in the Black and Gold.
Distributing the carries and playing time among such a talented bunch will be an area of focus for the coaches, but Monken elaborated on that idea that it is a good problem to have.
"I think what you end up having to do is to decide for each situation who fits that role," Monken said. "And then, develop your depth chart from there. Who is your athletic, receiving style back? Who is your downhill running type back? You figure out who the best guy is for whatever package you are running. In one package, a guy may be (the first option), but in another, he may be (the fourth option)."
Southern Miss will return to the practice field for their first Saturday practice of the spring season when they go through their second scrimmage inside the Park Practice Facility. The scrimmage is set to begin at 10 a.m.
Practices are open to the public but require a valid ID to gain access. Phones, cameras and notepads are prohibited during the session.
