HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss went through its 10th practice of the spring and its first since last Friday's scrimmage, Tuesday afternoon under overcast skies at Joe P. Park Practice Facility.
From their first scrimmage, Coach Todd Monken was glad to see the players starting to move at a faster pace.
"I thought the guys played hard and with energy. I thought that they played faster. When its practice and you're playing period after period, it's nice to see that even though they get sluggish, when they have a chance to catch their breath, they come back faster than they would in practice."
Monken believes that with so many players back in the secondary, the defensive backs will be one of team's strengths.
"We've got more experience (in the defensive backfield) with guys who have played a lot of football. The confidence comes across a little more. Our secondary will be a strength, between Jacorious Cotton, Deron Wilson, Jerrion Johnson, Emmanuel Johnson Kalen Reed and Alex Walters. There are a lot of guys who have played. So those guys are confident. We're just trying to get better.
Southern Miss will be back on the field Thursday afternoon for its 11th practice of the spring. Practices are open to the public but require a valid ID to gain access. Phones, cameras and notepads are prohibited during the session.
