Football Practice Report: April 7
Venue: Joe P. Park Practice Field
Format: Full Pads
Upcoming: Scrimmage (9-11:30 a.m., Saturday, April 9)
Report: Southern Miss held its second practice of the week and the final workout before the second scrimmage of the spring season on Thursday afternoon at Joe P. Park Practice Field. The team worked out for approximately three hours in full pads on a beautiful Hattiesburg spring day. The team continued to work on solidifying a depth chart with position battles at nearly every spot on the field. In addition, the Golden Eagles are focusing on fundamentals and improving each day.
Head Coach Jay Hopson
About the spirit of practice...
"I thought we came out and practiced hard today. I thought there was pretty good intensity that we need to continue. We need to go back and watch the film. I feel like I say this every day, but this is spring so there will be some mistakes but I think we practiced hard today."
On the scrimmages...
"I thought we made some plays. Nick (Mullens) had a good day. Pat (Brooks) had some good runs and I was really pleased with D.J. (Thompson). The scrimmage this Saturday is going to be a fun one. Last weekend was a smaller segment. There will be a good chance for guys to step up. Spring is such a good time because it gives guys a chance to win a job. During the fall it's more of a preparation time. So far this spring everything is fun to watch. Different guys have made plays and that's what we want. We want to see guys make explosive plays offensively. Defensively, we want to see good tackling and guys that stay above the cut. We will see what happens on Saturday."
Defensive Lineman Wil Freeman
What does it mean to be back after sitting out last season?
"It means everything. I missed everything. The hardest part was sitting out of the winning season. I was so happy for my brothers, but I was hungry and wanted to get back out here and help contribute. That's what I'm looking forward to."
Defensive Back Picasso Nelson Jr.
On being a veteran...
"I have really been trying to be more vocal. It is still a little bit strange to be called a veteran because I still feel like a young guy, but I know a lot of the younger guys look up to me. We have fun and sometimes I try to pull them to the side and show them what I see and as a whole how we are trying to get better."
What can we expect from the Golden Eagles?
"Everyone has very high energy... You can expect the Nasty Bunch to be back. Definitely come out. Bring your popcorn... It's gonna be a show."
