Southern Miss Spring Football Report: Day 8

April 6, 2017

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss football team split time between the Joe P. Park Practice Fields and M.M. Roberts Stadium to prepare for a Saturday morning scrimmage, its second of the spring.

Head coach Jay Hopson

On how practice fared overall
I thought we had great energy today. That's always a positive. It was a good practice today, and we are anxious for this Saturday. I saw some good things and I'm pleased about the last two days.
On Tyler Stutzman and other emerging offensive linemen
"Tyler has done a great job this spring. The one thing we've done is create a lot of competition, but Tyler has done well. Arvin Fletcher and Drake Dorbeck have had good springs too."

On ball security
"We had a few fumbles on the turf today, and that's never a good thing. It's been a good spring, but today shows something we have to correct as always."

Offensive lineman Tyler Stutzman

On how his spring has gone so far and the upcoming scrimmage
"It's going really well compared to last year. Reps with the ones has been different than reps with the twos, and I'll say it's been a whole lot better. Saturday is just a chance to prove I'm a starter and secure my spot a little bit more."

On who he has learned the most from at Southern Miss
"When you're behind a guy like Cameron Tom, there's nothing you can do besides learn. Anything he did, I would watch him. Being a two and getting as many reps as I could to make them count, now as a one I'll look to Coach [Erik] Losey because had a lot of experience at center and was an All-American at WKU. That's who I lean to whenever I have a question about technique."

Wide receiver Allenzae Staggers

On being healthy
"When I'm not out there, it doesn't feel like I'm part of the program. First day back, just happy to be out there again with my teammates. I'm enjoying the vibe."

On if he noticed anything different coming from the sideline
"Not really, just have to stay consistent with our stance and coming off the ball, things like that."

On Kwadra Griggs and Keon Howard in the QB competition
"They're great. I like the competition and that they always put each other to competition. When one makes a big play, the other tries to do the same thing. it's great. Both are great guys too."

On how he feels about this spring season compared to when he was an early enrollee in 2016
"I'm more confident, but I have to keep pushing myself day-by-day to get better than what I was last year."
