Week Three of Spring Drills Begins for Football Monday
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss football team returned to the practice fields here Monday afternoon to begin its third week of spring drills at the Joe P. Park Practice Facility.
The Golden Eagles continue to work on the things that second-year coach Todd Monken has stressed this spring, including showing more toughness.
"(I see it a) little bit more," said Monken on his team's toughness. "It is not going to happen overnight, but our guys are fighting. We have to be able to carry over certain drills that we do in the team periods. It is one thing when the light is on you for one rep, but can that be sustained over time."
The Golden Eagles also returned to practice for the first time since the team's first spring scrimmage last Saturday in Roberts Stadium. Monken said because of the quick turnaround it was tough to judge how things went, but said that the key moving forward was to keep getting more opportunities to compete and to continue to get better.
"You only get better with reps so we need to continue to get as many as we can (in practice)," said Monken. "We could use as many days as we can. Today was number seven. We got a number of reps (in today)."
Monken also praised Alan Howze following practice, after he missed the final eight games last season due to injury and has returned this spring for one final year this fall.
"It is great to have him out there," said Monken. "He is still coming back from that turf toe, but just him being out there and his energy. He likes to play the game. You could tell on Saturday when we scrimmaged a little bit how much he means to our defense."
The Golden Eagles return to the practice field Wednesday afternoon at 3:45 p.m. The workout is open to the public.
