HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss held its second scrimmage of the spring, Saturday morning at M.M. Roberts Stadium.
Though Head coach Ellis Johnson saw some improvement, he was disappointed overall.
"We're steadily making a little bit of progress, but to be frank, I was not that pleased," said Johnson. "We should be further along. Earlier in the scrimmage, in particular, we were just mishandling the ball and putting the ball on the ground. Defensively, we were making plays, but frankly, it's hard for me to tell if we are really getting that good on defense because we're making so many mistakes with ball-handling and missing blocks."
The coaches will now go back and look at the film before getting ready for the next week of spring practice.
Added Johnson, "We're making some great plays on offense that are well executed, but when you're making a great play on third and 17, you're just getting back to a normal situation. So we've got to get some things ironed out offensively. We made some progress, but it's just not where I hoped it would be."
Redshirt freshman Cole Weeks connected on 7-of-8 passing for 63 yards. Redshirt freshman Ricky Lloyd was 5-of-19 passing for 51 yards and a touchdown and redshirt junior Chris Campbell was 9-of-15 for 40 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for a touchdown.
Redshirt senior Desmond Johnson rushed 14 times for 46 yards and a touchdown. Redshirt junior Kendrick Hardy ran for 31 yards and a touchdown on nine carries. Redshirt freshman Cooper Harrington caught five passes for 45 yards. Senior Tracey Lampley caught four passes for 25 yards. Redshirt junior Justin Sims caught two passes for 19 yards and a touchdown and Hester caught two passes for -1 yards and a touchdown.
The Golden Eagles will return to practice this Monday as they work toward the annual Spring Game on April 14.
