Golden Eagles wrap up second week of spring practice
HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss football team concluded its second week of spring practice with a Friday morning session prior to the holiday weekend.
"This group is fun to coach," head coach Jay Hopson said. "It's a good group of guys and I think we have a lot of talent on this team. I think Keon Howard has had a good camp and Jack Abraham too. Marcelo Rodriguez has done some good things. The battle is going to go on past spring, but I feel like the after the scrimmage on Saturday that Keon and Jack had a good day. It'll be fun to watch next week who shines."
Howard enters his third season with the program and started six games last season. Abraham recently finished off a prolific season at NW Mississippi CC after spending the start of his career at Louisiana Tech.
Hopson also noted the cornerback position as one to keep an eye on throughout the spring and summer, featuring several players who will have much more expanded roles in the fall.
"Rachuan Mitchell and Earnest Gunn both have had good camps," he said. "Ty Williams [defensive back from East Mississippi CC] has had a good one too. Tre [LaMarque] Davis in the scrimmage and in this last week of practice has done well. We've built some depth at corner. Tre proved last year he is a player. That's the fun thing, just like quarterback and safety, there's a lot of competition that some will be defined in spring and others will come in August."
