Racheem Boothe preparing to build off breakout, All-Conference season
HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Redshirt-sophomore linebacker Racheem Boothe is Southern Miss' leading-returning tackler from a year ago, and the 2017 C-USA All-Freshman honoree is embracing another spring with the Golden Eagle football team.
The Bassfield, Miss., product may have made 79 tackles, including 8 1/2 for loss, but he says he has more room to grow.
"I just want to continue to get better on things from last season," he said. "I had a lot of mistakes and weaknesses that I just want to get better on. Scheme wise and everything else that's going on, it's about the same [as the last two years] with keeping it traditional and continuing to work on it."
Boothe also has also worked under a few different position coaches since his redshirt season in 2016 and now serves under Derek Nicholson, a star linebacker at Florida State who later played for the New York Giants. Boothe says he's excited about their future relationship.
"It's been the same for me [no matter the coach]," he said. "Coach Nicholson brings that extra pep and swagger to us and he teaches us a lot of the things he did in college."
Boothe's best game last season was a 14-tackle performance at Rice, where the Golden Eagles also clinched bowl eligibility for the third consecutive year. Two of those stops were behind the line (including a 10-yard loss) and he also forced a fumble. That performance earned him C-USA Defensive Freshman of the Week honors.
