HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss football team went through its initial scrimmage of spring practice under first-year head coach Ellis Johnson here Saturday morning in Carlisle-Faulkner Field at Roberts Stadium.

Jeremy Hester led the rushing game with 35 yards on five carries, while Kendrick Hardy added seven carries for 29 yards and Desmond Johnson tallied six rushes for 23 yards.

As the quarterback competition continues to heat up to replace four-year starter Austin Davis, both Chris Campbell and Ricky Lloyd enjoyed good outings. Both quarterbacks ran with the first and second teams and Campbell finished the day 13-of-17 for 103 yards, while Lloyd added 10-of-19 passes for 105 yards.

Both Tracey Lampley and Cooper Harrington caught four passes each for 21 and 32 yards, respectively, while Chris Briggs added three catches for 28 yards.

As for defense, Michael Smith led the "Nasty Bunch" with three sacks, while Nic Bekkers and Khyri Thornton added two each. Khalid Wilson had one sack and Layton Holcomb recovered a fumble.

During a segment of punting, Markese Triplett blocked a Peter Boehme boot.

The Golden Eagles, which were in pads for just the second time this spring for the scrimmage, return to the practice fields on Monday for practice No. 6. Southern Miss will go through a late-afternoon workout on the Golden Eagle campus.
