HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss football team conducted its second spring practice under first-year coach Ellis Johnson at the Joe P. Park Practice Facility here Wednesday afternoon.
Under almost perfect weather conditions, the Golden Eagles worked for just over two hours in helmets and shorts.
The first-year coach enjoyed the team's enthusiasm and remained pleased with the team's conditioning through the first two practices.
The Golden Eagles continued to work on installing new parts of the systems under both offensive coordinator Rickey Bustle and defensive coordinator Tommy West. Part of that installation in the learning of the system is new terminology that the players must continue to pick up, but progress has definitely been made over the first two practices in the eyes of the head coach.
Southern Miss spent half of its Wednesday practice working on individual drills before finishing the day with team and then special teams periods.
The squad will not practice again this week and will be off next week due to the school's spring break schedule. The Golden Eagles will return to practice on Monday, March 19, for an afternoon workout.
The practice schedule proceeds until the team's annual spring game, which is set for April 14 at 12 noon for Carlisle-Faulkner Field at Robert Stadium. The spring game is part of the 2012 Eagle Fest weekend.
