HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Southern Miss Athletics announced Monday the hiring of Chanelle Smith-Walker as Director of Digital Marketing and Creative Services.
Smith-Walker is no stranger to the athletics department after serving as a graduate assistant working with the M-Club and also the Digital Marketing and Creative Services department, beginning in August 2016.
During this time, Smith-Walker made her mark in the athletic department as her graphic design work for numerous sports and events has been honored and recognized by Skull Parks and In The Trenches, two leading social media and graphic design companies, that track and analyze athletic department graphics and social media content. “I am extremely excited and happy for Chanelle as she rose to the top of our national search for this position starting back in November,” said Brent Jones, Southern Miss Senior Associate Athletic Director of External Affairs. “We had an extremely talented and deep candidate pool for this critical position, however, Chanelle separated herself with her knowledge and experience in digital marketing, revenue generation through content creation, logo and brand management and graphic design.
“Chanelle’s impact on our department has already been felt with our integrated marketing and communications staff and she has worked directly with most of our sport teams and coaches on their needs including schedule posters, schedule cards, brochures, and social media graphics.”
Smith-Walker has an extensive background in athletic graphic design, digital marketing, photography, creative services, logo and brand management, website management and producing content for social and digital media and marketing campaigns.
Prior to working for Southern Miss Athletics as a graduate assistant she worked for fulltime as the assistant director of Pace Communications in Greensboro, N.C., primarily handling the Verizon Wireless account. Before that, she worked as a graphic designer for Team Connection. Her athletic graphic design and digital marketing experience includes working for the Atlantic Coast Conference, Elon University and performing freelance work for Army West Point.
“First of all, I could not be any more excited to be in this new role for Southern Miss athletics as I take this next step in my career,” said Smith-Walker. “I can’t thank Brent (Jones) and (Associate AD/Marketing and Communications) Kyle (George) enough for having the confidence in me with this fantastic opportunity. I’m just extremely ready to get started and continue to push our department forward.”
Smith-Walker started four years at Elon for the volleyball program, garnering Southern Conference All-Freshman Team honors, being a three-time team captain and earning team MVP honors in her senior year. Chanelle has a twin sister, Danielle, is who a graduate assistant coach with the Southern Miss Volleyball program, and also a brother, Joe, who played four years of football for Army West Point.
