Coin Flip: Middle Tennessee wins toss; elects to defer. Southern Miss receives opening kick.

Team Notes:

  • Middle Tennessee won the toss and deferred to the second half.
  • This was the first visit for Southern Miss in Murfreesboro and the third meeting overall with the Blue Raiders.
  • The game was the third overall meeting between the two schools, dating back to the 2009 New Orleans Bowl.

Offensive Notes:

  • The Golden Eagles collected a season-best 140 total yards in the first quarter with the previous best being 117 against Appalachian State. It was the fourth time this season the squad has done that.
  • George Payne collected a one-yard touchdown rush with 14:22 left in the second quarter. It was his fourth rushing score - and the Golden Eagles fourth of the year - and fifth of his career. Payne finished the day with a team-best 140 all-purpose yards - a career high. He notched a career-best 89 yards rushing.
  • QB Nick Mullens threw for over 200 yards for the eighth consecutive game and 11th time in his career. He finished with 426 yards in the contest, which is the second most ever thrown for by a Golden Eagles in a game (first - Austin Davis vs. Rice 461 in 2008). It was also the second time he threw for over 300 yards for his career - his previous career high of 370 yards coming at UAB last season. Mullens also set a school mark for completions with 36.
  • The Golden Eagles registered their longest touchdown drive of the season of 92 yards that culminated on a 17-yard TD pass from Mullens to Michael Thomas in the fourth quarter.
  • WR Michael Thomas collected his first 100-yard receiving game of his career with 114 yards on nine catches with two touchdowns.
  • The Golden Eagles tallied a season-best 537 total offensive yards.

Defensive Notes:

  • Freshman Trae Collins recovered his first fumble of his career with 11:27left in the third quarter. Dasman McCullum notched his third forced fumble of the season and third of his career.
  • LB Brian Anderson tallied a team-high 11 tackles, registering his second double-digit tackle performance on the game.

Special Team Notes:

  • Corey Acosta converted a 25-yard field goal with 3:38 left in the first quarter and a 26-yarder with 2:23 left I the second quarter. He now has converted 11-of-14 for the season, giving him 35 for his career, moving into fifth place on the Golden Eagle career charts for field goals made. He moved ahead of Brant Hanna's 33 from 1998-2001.
  • Acosta missed just his third extra point attempt of his career - in 61 attempts - when it was blocked in the second quarter.
  • The Golden Eagles were unsuccessful with their first pair of two-point conversion tries this season, both coming in the fourth quarter.
