Southern Miss Head Coach Ellis Johnson
Overall Statement...
"We played poorly, but I have to give them credit. They are a good-looking football team, and I said it before we played. They executed well. They know what they are, they know what they do, and they do a great job. I was just disappointed on how we played fundamentally--blocking, tackling, the basics of football. We just didn't play well in that area. We have to go back and start back at square one."

"We just have to keep grinding away, and it doesn't get any easier. We are playing one of the best football teams next week (Louisville) and probably one of the top 20 teams the following week (Boise State), and then what everybody thinks is the best team in our conference the following week (UCF), so it's not going to get any easier. It's a tough way to grow up, but we are going to have to grow up or we are going to suffer."

WKU head coach Willie Taggart
Overall thoughts on the 42-17 win over Southern Miss...
"I think we have ourselves a real good football team. I tell our guys every week that we have not played our best ball game yet. We keep getting closer. I think the reason we were so dominant is because we have a big time college football environment around here. With the fans packing the stadium, our guys drew strength from our fans."

On if this was WKU's best performance of the season...
"This was our best performance of the year, but we are not where we are capable of being. There are still a lot little mistakes here and there that we need to get corrected. I told our guys that great teams are never satisfied. We had a good preseason and now the real season starts. We have to be locked in. It is going to be a big time eight weeks for us. Every week we set our standards. That is what great teams do. We are just going out every week and trying to compete against ourselves. We want to see how good we can be."

On the ceremony with former WKU head coach Jack Harbaugh prior to the game...
"I get emotional every time I talk about Coach [Harbaugh]. He has done so much for me, for our university and is such a great person and a great guy. He is everything that a coach should be. [The recognition] was something that needed to be done and it was great in the environment today. I was so happy that Coach Harbaugh was able to be here and witness this."

On this win being another big step for the program...
"Our team is starting to understand the things that come with big time college football. I think the people in the community are all starting to understand it. We are all growing together. There is something special going on here now."

On having Sun Belt Conference Commissioner Karl Benson at the game...
"It is always good when he comes to check out our football team, our environment and our campus. It is good being his first year here to be able to see all of the schools [in the Sun Belt]. It is good for him to see all of the good things we have going here in our school and our community. I am glad for him to be here to see that."
