Head Coach Ellis Johnson
Opening Statement...
"East Carolina showed a lot of mental toughness and character. They came off of a tough loss and their players played hard so that was a achievement for them and I'd like to congratulate them. I thought we had a great home atmosphere, and I wish we could've made it a whole lot better out on the playing surface."

"I told the players in the locker room at the end of a ball game you either have a real good feeling about your team or you don't... I didn't have that feeling after coming off of a loss at Nebraska. I don't know if we feel the same way now, but the way we played was just atrocious in the area of mistakes. The turnovers and the penalties and the things that never show up on the stats sheets is the missed assignments. Some guys made some plays and I thought our football team showed a little more character today, than we did in the first that first game. I was very disappointed in how they performed in the first game, but I think they tried to play with a little bit of character and great effort today."

"We just did not play very smart and lost it, and we made some terrible mistakes that ended up in a very disappointing loss."

On a tough offensive stretch in the third quarter...
"A fourth down stop's a big momentum gainer, but athethird down stop was what was more disappointing to me. The fourth-down stop we thought we had something we saw on film and we felt like it was a pretty safe call. I obviously have great confidence in Corey Acosta and it had nothing to do with making field goals. We thought we had a shot there and keep possession of the ball to make bigger points, but did not execute."

On the first drive, and then the offense after that...
"We executed better, the assignments, technique and the whole execution of the offense was on track (on the first drive). We maybe only had one or two missed executions in that drive. Then we had problems after that. We tried to speed it up and slow it down and keep a change in tempo, because it felt like it gave us the best chance to get lined up and get a play off real quickly. As we changed the tempo, I don't think we did a real good job on offense of staying within ourselves and not creating penalties. We had some misalignments that weren't wide enough or tight enough, etc. On the second turnover, we had a back and receiver misaligned and we just had poor execution."

On Anthony Alford...
"Every time we came to that point where we thought we might need to pull him out and let him settle down, all of the sudden he would come up with a big play. He had some balls dropped, but also has some poor location. What I call poor location is when you throw to the right guy, but the balls thrown a little bit high or low or wide. I thought that's what was really his biggest problem today. It was not good ball location. Most of the decisions were pretty good and he took care of the ball. He also made some plays with his feet, but obviously we have to get him to play made in the pocket to be a real effective offense."

Junior Quarterback Chris Campbell
On whether he knew if he was going to be playing today at all...
"Being the No. 2 at the start of last week, and the off-week, my role is to be ready at any given time. I prepared like I did against Nebraska and like I do every week of the season and I am just going to be continuously ready."

On the quarterback job...
"My thoughts are to keep doing what I'm doing and to keep working hard and getting better every day. That's has been my thing since last spring and I continue to work on that."

On bouncing back...
"Really, I think it's going to be not just my job, but the seniors' job as well the leaders on the team just to keep the mental focus in and strong, especially this week when we go on the road. It is a tough loss but I feel like we are still in this thing and we are still competing to win another conference championship. Like I said, we just need to stay focused and keep working hard."

Austin Quattrochi
On the second half, after a good offensive start...
"We started off quick and I was happy with the way it was going, but a little adversity hit and we just have to handle it better as a team. We are going to look at the film tomorrow and find out what we did wrong, as there is plenty of it, and try to get better while start getting ready for Western Kentucky."

On the play of the offense...
"You can't just fault one guy for a loss. It's a team game and it's always going to be a team game. He's a freshman. You have to take it upon yourself as a senior, as people who have been there, you have to take it upon yourself to help him along. We might have slacked a little in that department. You just can't fault one guy."

Anthony Alford
On the first drive and then after that... "I just took what the defense gave us as they were playing five people in the box and we should have been running it and we took what they gave us. Later in the game I tried to force it."

On his first start...
"I'm disappointed in myself. I didn't play the way I wanted to play with a couple of turnovers so I was disappointed in myself."

When Campbell entered the game...
"I was supporting him 100 percent, just like he supported me. I was hoping he would do good (when he came into the game)."

East Carolina Head Coach Ruffin McNeil
Opening statement...
"I'm proud of our team and our coaches. We talked about team, we, us, ours, those four words. You don't win games by one particular group; you win them by playing on both sides of the ball. I was proud of our guys. We dug down against a really good football team, and this is a tough place to play. Ellis and his guys have a great staff and have a great program over there. So we came out with a big accomplishment, but it's a big challenge too, to have a chance win here in `The Rock.' I'm proud of our kidss."

On quarterback Shane Carden's play...
"Shane played smart. Jamie Collins is one of the best defensive players in our league; he posed a threat to us. Shane handled it well, everybody stayed calm on the sidelines. He was very poised and confident and then we came in at half and made an adjustment. He got us to be able to run a little bit with some effectiveness, and I thought he led our team to a great win."

On winning the turnover battle...
"Well, we work on them. It feels good to work on something like we have, as extensively as we have, and to see if pay off for us. Our kids have worked on it, our coaches have emphasized it, and to see it happen in a venue like this was a giant accomplishment for us."

On the play of the ECU defense...
"I was proud of our defense. I thought we played a consistent number of 11-man football snaps, and that was big for us. If we made a mistake, they adjusted well. I thought Brian Mitchell, John Wiley, Marc Yellock, and Duane Price did a great job of having a game plan, a recipe, and they stayed with it today. We knew they had a challenge and the ability to stretch it vertically and horizontally with the run game, so we had to come in and try to stop and control the run and hopefully affect the quarterback."

East Carolina Player Quotes
Quarterback Shane Carden
On the victory...
"This week coming out and getting a hard road victory like we did today, it's a hard place to play. This is a great team in our conference division, so that was a great in for the whole team."

On his first start...
"Obviously, I do get game jitters. I got game jitters in high school, but I never felt like I was overwhelmed or it was too fast for me. I always felt like I was pretty comfortable and just playing my roots."

On being able to scramble for yardage...
"I had to make decision not throw interceptions. That was the number one thing this week - not to have turnovers. I didn't throw any interceptions, none of the play makers made any fumbles. That's what you have to do to win a game."

On the play of the defense...
"The defense played great, all of them played great. This is a hard offense and this is a hard place to play. They are a good team. Our defense let us stick around and allowed our offense to get going and once that happened it was done."

ECU Linebacker Montese Overton
On playing well and allowing the offense to get going...
"Well they played great today. We had to come out and we couldn't worry about the score or not. We had to do our thing really. We didn't really connect in the first half for the first or second quarter, so we come out with some leverage against them"

On getting pressure on the USM quarterbacks...
"Coach called more blitz plays because all the coverage, and they don't want to go to a hot route all day. So coach put on the clamps and we just kept blitzing the quarterback.

On scoring a touchdown...
"Yeah, it was crazy. That's never happened to me, but when I picked that ball up, I just had to go. It felt good to get a touchdown."
