Southern Miss Head Coach Ellis Johnson
Opening statement...
"High and low... Hot and cold, I think that there is enough things to build on for the offense. I think Chris (Campbell) and Anthony (Alford) played extremely well. A lot of guys did a good job on the offensive side of the ball, although we did have some mistakes. We put the ball on the ground once, and a few balls should have been picks. But there is plenty of things to build on, and we can become a pretty good team. Defensively I think it was poor. I think that Nebraska is a really good team, so I am not trying to take anything away from them, they probably have a shot to make it a long way in their conference. But I was disappointed. A lot of young guys on our defense showed their youth rather than their talent at times."

On the defensive game plan on Nebraska, and any new wrinkles from the Huskers...
"Not really, we were playing so bad on defense it didn't matter. It seemed like they were just working on plays up until later in the second quarter. We've just got to get better. We are not that tough on defense."

On the Southern Miss secondary...
"We seldom got any pressure in his (Taylor Martinez's) face. A lot of his throws were play action passes, and came out pretty quick. It was a tough day out there for them, but it certainly wasn't just their fault."

On USM's offensive line and running game...
"Yeah I thought they played well. I think we can sub our quarterbacks and switch up the game plan and try and make sure they all got a shot in the game. In the second half we were just trying to make our players better, so I think that hurt our rotation, and our overall flow of the game. I think they ended up taking over the line, but overall I liked our execution."

On the kick return for touchdown...
"I thought our return game was pretty good. The kicker is very good and didn't give us a chance most of the time, but I think we did good when we had the chance. Our coverage was suspect though. We had one kid hurt at the beginning of the game, and we had some problems in the inside with the backup players. But on the return he did a lot of it on his own, and it was good."

On the USM fumble...
"It was an exchange thing. Our quarterback wanted to give the running back the ball but he didn't realize he was getting the ball. It was just miss-executed."

On the Southern Miss quarterback rotation...
"It was good. I was interested to see how they handle a real game plan and a real defense. I thought Chris did an excellent job controlling our offense. It became apparent in the second quarter that our running game wasn't going to work, and the defense was just sitting on him because he wasn't a threat to run the ball. When Anthony went in, they had respect to him and things opened up the middle. We'll look at the film and that could sway some of the snaps, but I can't tell now. We have an open date so we will work through it.

On anything Nebraska did that led to execution issues...
"The biggest thing was they man-handled us on the line. I thought that was obvious the whole game. The thing they did well was their tempo. They run a power offense with a temp, which is unusual, and we didn't have the ability to keep up with them a couple of times. They have some plays in the offense that no matter what you run on defense it will be a successful play for them. When they can do that, I can't imagine how well they did on third down."

On if Nebraska's offense was unusual today...
"Well not as much as the physical nature. I would credit it more for the physical part, which you don't see that much. Their offensive style is physically tough. I think our assignments started snowballing because of that, rather than the other. Then once we got tired, that is when they dominated."

On Martinez's game today...
"I think they probably just let him execute today a lot more because they know if they have a more balanced offense it will be better, especially when they do play-action passes. I think most of his balls were off of play-action passes. They just really didn't need the quarterback runs to be successful."

Southern Miss Player Quotes
Quarterback (Chris Campbell)
On if Nebraska's defense caught him off-guard...
"There were a few series with maybe one or two plays where they tried to go three-down and get some blitzes, but other than that, it was pretty much what I saw on film, from the past years and what we saw in practice. I was very prepared by the coaches for this game."

On if Nebraska impressed him as a team...
"They were very strong, very physical. Everything we saw on film was true. They were fast, flying to the ball, hard hitters and a good, sound, polished team." < Quarterback Anthony Alford
On Nebraska's physicality...
"They were real physical up front. They came out hard. Overall, they were a real physical football team."

Running BackJeremy Hester
On if Martinez's passing changed the game...
"In a way it did. It changed a lot. I think he did a great job for what he does, and the things he does are very unrespected. I think he did a great job."

On Nebraska's defensive line handling the line of scrimmage...
"I beg to differ. I think our offensive line held their ground pretty good. Those are some big guys up front and they're pretty strong. I think our line did a great job for us on assignments and opening up holes and doing what they have to do for us to make plays."

Cornerback Deron Wilson
On if Martinez showed him anything that they hadn't seen on film...
"No. Everything that they ran, we saw on film."

On if Nebraska relied more on Martinez after Burkhead went out...
"Yeah. They looked like they ran the offense around Martinez more, instead of around the running back, Burkhead. He (Martinez) took the load tonight."

Nebraska Head Coach Bo Pelini
Opening Statement...
"I said going into the game that this would give us a starting point, that's all it was. I just told the team, it gives us an assessment of where we are and what we need to get better at. I thought there were a lot of good things out there. I thought there were a lot of positives, but there's a bunch we need to fix. The penalties, obviously we were good in the penalty area, we didn't put the football on the ground, no turnovers. That's a pretty good recipe for success. I thought we were very efficient on offense, and I thought we executed pretty well most of the time on defense. They gave us some things we didn't quite expect. I thought they did a nice job. They gave us a variety of offense with a couple different quarterbacks, but I thought our guys adjusted well...reacted well. We called a lot of defense in the game to offset what they did, and I thought our guys handled that very well. We got a lot of guys snaps. There were a lot of positives from our standpoint, but really all that gave us was a starting point. We've got a lot of work to do from here."

On Taylor Martinez's performance today...
"It's what I expected from Taylor. I've been seeing a lot of good things. I thought, to be efficient, he's got to handle the offense well. I thought he directed things very well. He got us out of some bad plays and into some right plays. For the most part, made good decisions. I know he has one throw that we were lucky to get back, but for the most part, I thought he played very well, very efficient. (He) made good decisions, and he distributed the ball well. I thought there were a lot of positives there."

On what he saw in the process of developing defensive playmakers...
"I thought it was good. I thought we played a pretty good number of guys. It's not easy, because a lot of the things that we saw, especially some of the schemes we saw up front. We had no idea going into the game really what to expect. I thought our guys reacted pretty well to it and adjusted well. I thought we played pretty well in the backend, the one touchdown pass I know Drew (Andrew Green) would like back, that shouldn't have happened. But other than that, I thought there were a lot of positives. I thought (Alonzo) Whaley did some good things out there, (Corey) Cooper played well, Harvey Jackson...you know, I thought we were pretty solid."

On what his concerns were defensively...
"Anytime you get spread out all over the field, we really didn't know what they were going to do with the quarterbacks. Toward the end of the game there, end of the third quarter, fourth quarter, they were running a wildcat-type offense with their quarterback. You just do the math. It's not easy to deal with that, especially when you don't know what sets and what structures they're going to do it out of. There were some adjustments that needed to happen, and I thought our guys reacted pretty well. I thought we did a lot of good things defensively. My biggest concern was on special teams, and it wasn't really going in. We didn't execute very well. There is a lot of things we need to shore up in the special teams area, but I do know this: everything is very fixable. It was obvious breakdowns from our standpoint."

On the status of Rex Burkhead...
"He'll be fine. He's day-to-day, week-to-week. I don't think it's anything long term. He'll be fine."

On what he told his team right before halftime...
"I didn't tell them anything magical, it was just keep doing what you're doing and stay the course. There was a couple things in that first half that we'd obviously like back, but you stay the course. I felt real good about where we were and how we were playing. I had a lot of confidence that we were going to take care of business in the second half, and I think our players felt good about it, too. I think they were mad at themselves, mad at the situation. We kind of had control of the game and we let them back in. We can't do that."

On how he thought some of the new receivers responded...
"I think it's obvious. You saw a lot of guys make catches. I don't know the number, but I thought it was pretty good across the board. We had a lot of guys play, and I don't know that there was anybody in there that didn't catch the football, or didn't have a catch. It's a pretty good job of distributing the ball."
