Matthew O'Donnell, a former letterwinner at Brown University, enters his first season as a defensive graduate assistant with the Golden Eagles.
O'Donnell joined the Southern Miss staff after working as an intern for one year at the University of Iowa. Working as a student assistant, O'Donnell helped out with both the offense and strength and conditioning staffs. For the offensive staff, he assisted with preparing weekly playbook binders, opponent breakdown and game day charting. In the weight room, O'Donnell aided with athlete training, daily equipment maintenance and test data imputing.
Before his stint with the Hawkeyes, O'Donnell was a linebacker for the Brown University football team, helping the Bears claim the 2008 Ivy League Championship. In 2011, he was tabbed All-Ivy League. O'Donnell was a member of the football team's Leadership Committee.
Off the field, he organized the "Bench Press 4 Cancer" benefit for the American Cancer Society and participated in the "Be the Match" bone marrow matching program. The Iowa City, Iowa native was a member of Theta Delta Chi fraternity. In addition, O'Donnell volunteered at Fox Point Elementary School in Providence, R.I.
O'Donnell graduated from Brown with a bachelor's degree in economics in 2012.
