Matt Kitchens, a former four-year letterwinner at Arkansas Tech, enters his second season as a defensive graduate assistant with the Golden Eagles.
Kitchens came to Southern Miss after one season as the full-time linebackers coach at his alma mater. In his lone year leading the unit, Kitchens had one linebacker, Logan Genz, top the 100-tackle mark and lead the team in tackles. Genz also tallied a team-best 9.5 tackles for loss.
Prior to taking over the fulltime duties, Kitchens spent two seasons as a defensive graduate assistant at Arkansas Tech where he also assisted with the linebackers.
In his four years as a Wonder Boy, Kitchens played in 42 games with 20 starts and recorded 211 total tackles, including 104 solo stops. In addition, Kitchens, who was an All-State selection and a two-time Class 5A All-Conference selection at Russellville High School, had 14.0 tackles for loss for 46 yards, had one sack, forced three fumbles, recovered four fumbles and picked off one passes. As a senior in 2009, Kitchens recorded 46 tackles, 7.5 tackles for a loss and a sack to help lead the Wonder Boys to a 9-3 overall record and a second round appearance in the NCAA Division II Playoffs.
Kitchens is married to the former Jaclyn Blake of Wynne, Ark.
