Defensive Graduate Assistant

Matt Kitchens, a former four-year letterwinner at Arkansas Tech, enters his first season as a defensive graduate assistant with the Golden Eagles.

Kitchens comes to Southern Miss after one season as the fulltime linebackers coach at his alma mater. In his lone year leading the unit, Kitchens had one linebacker, Logan Genz, top the 100-tackle mark and lead the team in tackles. Genz also tallied a team-best 9.5 tackles for loss.

Prior to taking over the fulltime duties, Kitchens spent two seasons as a defensive graduate assistant where he also assisted with the linebackers.

In his four years as a Wonder Boy, Kitchens played in 42 games and made 20 starts and recorded 211 total tackles, including 104 solo stops. In addition, Kitchens, who was an All-State selection and a two-time Class 5A All-Conference selection at Russellville High School, had 14.0 tackles for 46 yards in losses, had one sack, forced three fumbles, recovered four fumbles and picked off one passes. As a senior in 2009, Kitchens recorded 46 tackles, 7.5 tackles for a loss and a sack to help lead the Wonder Boys to a 9-3 overall record and a second round appearance in the NCAA Division II Playoffs.
