Basketball Closes Out Nonconference Slate with SEOSU
HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss basketball team finishes nonconference play with a home game against Southeastern Oklahoma State on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. at Reed Green Coliseum.
For the men's contest, $5 bleacher tickets will be available as it will also be Season Ticket Holder Appreciation night. All season ticket holders receive two complimentary tickets to the game by visiting the Green Coliseum Ticket Office located at the North entrance. Tickets may still be purchased online at SouthernMissTickets.com or on the day of the game at the coliseum.
The food item for the Southeastern Oklahoma State game is a chicken tender basket for $6 and the South Jones High School band will also perform during the game. In addition, the first 500 fans in attendance receive a Southern Miss lanyard.
The game marks the first ever meeting between Southern Miss and Southeastern Oklahoma State. The Golden Eagles enter the game 2-8, while the Savage Storm own a 4-5 record. Southeastern has played four Great American Conference games.
Despite never playing Southeastern Oklahoma State, Southern Miss has played six games against current members of the GAC. The Golden Eagles are 3-3 overall against the GAC, holding a 2-0 record against Northwestern Oklahoma State, a 1-1 mark against Arkansas Tech and an 0-1 clip against Arkansas-Monticello and Southwestern Oklahoma State.
Southern Miss and Northwestern Oklahoma State played during the 1974-75 and 1975-76 seasons with the Golden Eagles posting a pair of victories. Southern Miss won the first meeting 88-33 on Jan. 4, 1975, while posting a 91-72 win the following year on Jan. 3, 1976. Arkansas Tech won the first ever meeting between the two teams (W, 81-69) on Jan. 5, 1955 in the Senior Bowl Tournament in Mobile, Ala., before the Golden Eagles notched an 87-41 win 45 years later on Dec. 19, 2000. Southern Miss played Arkansas-Monticello during the 1930-31 season, while taking on Southwestern Oklahoma State in the Sunshine Classic in Portalis, N.M. on Dec. 27, 1956 (L, 72-80).
The Golden Eagles have played five games at home and five on the road to start the season. Southern Miss has performed better at home, averaging 12.4 more points per game at Reed Green Coliseum. As a team, the Golden Eagles are shooting .398 from the floor at home, 76 points higher than on the road.
Khari Price is leading the team in scoring, averaging 10.5 points per game. Price has upped his average to 15.6 points per game at home. The redshirt junior also leads the team in assists, dishing out 32 helpers so far this season -- more than double any other player on the team.
Eddie Davis III is second on the team's scoring list, averaging 9.4 points per game. The redshirt freshman has recorded seven double-digit scoring efforts in the nine games he has played this season. Davis has notched five straight games with double-figure scoring. He has been consistent at home and on the road, averaging 9.4 ppg at home and 9.5 ppg on the road.
Davis also leads the team in rebounds (51), just ahead of Keljin Blevins (41). Kourtlin Jackson leads the team in steals (7), just ahead of Price (6), Robert Thomas III (5), Cortez Edwards (5) and Davis (5). Tim Rowe has swatted six shots to lead the team.
Following the game with Southeastern Oklahoma State, the Golden Eagles will open up Conference USA play. Southern Miss begins league play on the road with a game on Saturday, Jan. 2 at defending C-USA Regular Season Champion Louisiana Tech. Tipoff is slated for 6:00 p.m. in Ruston, La.
