Eagles End '03 "Home" Season Against William Carey

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Though only about four miles apart in Hattiesburg, Southern Miss' and William Carey's basketball teams have never played each other. That will change Monday night though, when the two teams play in Green Coliseum on the Southern Miss campus.

That game is scheduled for 7 p.m., and will be Southern Miss' final home game of the 2003 portion of the '03-'04 schedule. Specially-priced tickets are available to the game (see the attached ticket information), and may be purchased at the Ferlise Center Ticket Office, by calling 601-266-5418 or 1-800-844-TICK, or at the door Monday night.

William Carey brings a 3-8 record into the game, but the Crusaders traditionally play a tough non-conference schedule before getting into Gulf Coast Athletic Conference action. Last season was a good example. Though Carey finished 15-16 overall, The Crusaders were 12-4 in league play.

Carey comes into the game off an 88-83 loss to Xavier, and with four players averaging double figure points. Lionel Turner leads that group at 14.5 points a game, followed by Braxton Robins at 13.1, Jaeson Maravich at 12.8 and Anthony Barnes at 11.1. Carey is averaging 79.0 points a game while giving up 82.6.

There has been considerable interest locally in the game, and, in particular, the appearance of Maravich, whose father, Pistol Pete, played a freshman game in Green Coliseum, in the 1966-67 season, finishing with 42 points in the game, despite missing several minutes with an injury.

Southern Miss brings a 5-3 record into the game, with the Eagles coming off a Saturday night loss at LSU, 65-50. The Eagles cut what was a 13-point deficit to as few as three points midway through the second half in that game, but then had trouble finding the basket in the late going.

Charles Gaines had his second-straight double-double in that game, with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Jasper Johnson also doubled, with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Gaines continues to lead Southern Miss scorers and rebounders, at 18.5 points and 11.4 rebounds a game. Jasper Johnson is the only other Golden Eagle player in double figures, at 14.8 points a game.

Following Monday's game, the Eagles will take a short holiday break before ending 2003 play with a Dec. 30 game at Auburn. The Eagles then will end non-league play with a Jan. 4 home game, against UNO, and open C-USA action Jan. 7, at Louisville.
