Having won two straight games for the first time this year, Southern Miss (5-3) will take that streak to Biloxi, Miss. when they participate in the Mississippi Gulf Coast Classic, Dec. 18-20. Also taking part is New Orleans, Louisiana Tech and Alcorn State. The Golden Eagles open the Classic on Tuesday, December 18 at 8:00 p.m. against New Orleans.
This will be just the 22nd meeting between the two schools. New Orleans leads the series, 11-10. Southern Miss has won four of the last five meetings.
The Golden Eagles are led by guard Jeremy Wise. The sophomore leads the team in scoring with 17.6 points per game. Right behind him is freshman R.L. Horton with 14.5, junior Courtney Beasley with 12.1 and sophomore Sai'Quon Stone at 9.9. Gjio Bain leads Southern Miss on the boards, pulling down 9.5 rebounds a game.
Southern Miss is coming off an 82-68 victory over Alabama State. Courtney Beasley led the Golden Eagles with a season-high 19 points, while Wise added 19 points and a season-high six rebounds. Bain contributed by tying a career-high 16 rebounds.
New Orleans enters the tournament with a 7-1 record on the year. The Privateers are led by guard Bo McCalebb. The senior currently leads the team with 20.6 points per game while grabbing 4.5 rebounds. Junior forward Kyndall Dykes is averaging 13.5 points while leading the team with seven rebounds per game.
UNO is coming off a 71-56 victory over Savannah State. McCalebb led the Privateers with 20 points. Forward T.J. Worley added 14 points and a game-high ten rebounds.
Following the Mississippi Gulf Coast Classic, Southern Miss will return to Hattiesburg to face McNeese State on Sunday, December 23 at 2:00 p.m.
