HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss men's basketball team will closes its three-game homestand this Saturday, December 14, when it hosts St. Catharine. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m. CT.
This will be the first-ever regular season meeting between Southern Miss and St. Catharine. Last year, the Golden Eagles defeated SCC, 85-51, in exhibition play.
Southern Miss enters today's game with an 8-1 record. The Golden Eagles defeated Georgia State, 75-65, in overtime last Saturday.
Senior guard Neil Watson leads the team with 11.7 points per game. He is second in Conference USA with in free throw percentage (.906) while also adding 3.4 assists. Junior forward Aaron Brown is averaging 10.9 points. Senior forward Daveon Boardingham is scoring 10.0 points and pulling down 4.2 rebounds. Senior forward Michael Craig is adding 9.9 points and a team-high 6.9 boards and senior guard Jerrold Brooks is averaging 8.4 points.
Southern Miss is averaging 70.1 points per game and is leading C-USA by allowing just 61.9. The Golden Eagles are connecting on 45.1% from the field and 34.1% from three while allowing just 41.2% from the floor and 33.5% from behind the arc. Southern Miss is also outrebounding its opponents, 34.4-to-31.9.
St. Catharine comes into today's game with a 7-4 record. The Patriots are coming off an 84-70 defeat at William Carey on Thursday.
Senior forward William Tolefree leads the Patriots with 15.3 points. He is also averaging 5.5 rebounds and 1.9 blocks. Senior guard Omar Skinner is scoring 13.0 points and is pulling down 6.3 rebounds. He is also averaging 2.1 steals. Junior guard William Bailey is averaging 12.8 points. Junior forward Julito Hutchinson is averaging 10.8 points and a team-leading 7.3 rebounds.
St. Catharine is averaging 83.7 points while allowing 76.2. The Patriots are connecting on 49.2-percent from the floor and just 24.2% from three while allowing 45.1-percent from the field and 36.0-percent from three. SCC is also outrebounding its opponents, 40.5-to-33.0 per game.
Head coach J.T. Burton is in his sixth year as the head of the St. Catharine program, where he has an 82-71 (.536) record.
