HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss men's basketball team begins a three-game homestand Wednesday night, December 4, when it hosts Morehead State. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT.
Southern Miss and Morehead State will meet for the second consecutive year and the ninth time overall. The Eagles hold a 5-3 record in the series. In games played in Hattiesburg, Southern Miss leads, 2-1. This will be the first meeting in Hattiesburg since 1973.
Southern Miss enters the game with a 6-1 record. The Golden Eagles dropped their first game of the season last Friday, 69-38, to ninth-ranked Louisville. Junior forward Aaron Brown leads the Black and Gold with 10.7 points. He is connecting on 49.0-percent from the field. Senior forward Michael Craig is scoring 9.7 points and pulling down a team-high 5.9 rebounds. Senior guard Neil Watson is also averaging 9.7 points and 3.2 assists. He leads Conference USA in free throw percentage, connecting on 94.4-percent from the charity stripe. Senior forward Daveon Boardingham is adding 9.4 points and a 4.6 boards and senior guard Jerrold Brooks is averaging 8.9 points.
Southern Miss is averaging 68.9 points per game and is leading C-USA by allowing just 61.7. The Golden Eagles are connecting on 45.7% from the field and 36.4% from three while allowing just 41.2% from the floor and 33.6% from behind the arc. Southern Miss is also outrebounding its opponents, 34.3-to-30.7.
Morehead State comes into tonight's game with a 7-3 record. The Eagles are coming off a 74-69 victory over Wright State on Monday. Junior guard Angelo Warner is sixth in the Ohio Valley Conference with 17.5 points. He also leads the league with 2.7 steals and is second in minutes played (34.8). Redshirt sophomore guard Brent Arrington is scoring 11.8 points and is seventh in the OVC with 1.9 three-pointers made. Redshirt senior center Chad Posthumus is averaging 11.0 points and is leading the OVC with 12.5 rebounds. Senior guard Bakara Turner is also averaging 10.4 points. Junior guard Kareem Storey is second in the league with 5.5 assists.
Morehead State is averaging 78.7 points while allowing 72.6. The Eagles are connecting on 45.0-percent from the floor and just 27.9% from three while allowing 45.2-percent from the field and 31.3-percent from three. MSU is also outrebounding their opponents, 39.2-to-30.7 and is second in the OVC with 8.8 steals per game.
Head coach Sean Woods is in his second year as the head of the Morehead State program, where he has a 22-21 (.512) record. In six years as a head coach, Woods is 72-101 (.416).
