Southern Miss to Take on Eighth-Ranked Arizona

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss men's basketball team will play the second game of a three-game road trip this Tuesday, Dec. 4, when it faces eighth-ranked Arizona. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. CT and the game will be televised by the Pac-12 Network.
Southern Miss comes into tonight's game with a 6-1 record after falling at New Mexico State, 68-60, Saturday night.
Senior forward Jonathan Mills led Southern Miss with 12 points and eight rebounds. Junior forward Michael Craig had 12 points and four rebounds and junior guard Neil Watson score 11 points on three three-pointers.
Senior guard Dwayne Davis is leading the team with 15.1 points while pulling down 4.7 rebounds. Mills is scoring 10.0 points and grabbing a team-high 7.6 boards a game. Craig is adding 9.9 points and 5.4 rebounds.
Southern Miss is scoring 64.9 points per game but allowing just 58.9, second in Conference USA. The Golden Eagles are shooting 46.0-percent from the floor and allowing its opponents to just 38.1-percent, which is also second in the league. The Golden Eagles are connecting on just 30.9-percent from three-point range, but allowing just 28.4% from the same distance, tops in C-USA. Southern Miss is also outrebounding its opponents, 34.1-to-29.0. The Golden Eagles are also leading the league in free throw shooting, connecting on 77.0% of their attempts from the charity stripe.
Head coach Donnie Tyndall is in his first season at the helm of the Southern Miss men's basketball program. Tyndall is 6-1 (.857) as head coach of the Golden Eagles. He has compiled a 120-86 (.583) record in seven years as a head coach.
Arizona enters tonight's game with a 5-0 record. The Wildcats are ranked eighth in both the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today Coaches Polls. UA is coming off an 85-57 victory at Texas Tech Saturday night.
Sophomore guard Nick Johnson led all scorers with 18 points. Senior guard Mark Lyons and senior forward Solomon Hill both scored 14 points. Freshman forwards Brandon Ashley and Grant Jerrett had 12 and 11 respectively. Freshman center Kaleb Tarczewski added a game-high 13 rebounds.
Hill and Lyons are leading Arizona with 14.0 points per game. Johnson is scoring 11.8 points and is fourth in the Pac-12 with 4.2 assists. Ashley is adding 11.0 while leading the team with 7.4 rebounds per game. He is also fourth in the league with 1.8 blocks per game and fifth in field goal percentage, connecting on 61.5-percent from the field. Senior guard Kevin Parrom leads the conference in three-point field goal percentage, hitting 56.3% from behind the arc.
As a team, the Wildcats are scoring a conference-best 85.2 points per game and allowing just 60.6. Arizona is connecting on 52.3% from the field, which leads the Pac-12, while the opposition is connecting on just 38.8%. From three-point distance, UA is connecting on a Pac-12 leading 43.8%, but is allowing 35.7%. The Wildcats are outrebounding their opponents by more than 12 boards a game 37.4-to-25.0.
Head coach Sean Miller is in his fourth season at the helm of the Arizona men's basketball program, where he has compiled a 74-35 (.679) record. In his ninth year overall, Miller has compiled a 194-82 (.703) record.
