Eagles End Two-Game Home Stand
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss ends an early-season, two-game home stand Tuesday night, with a game against the team that's the preseason pick to win the Southwestern Athletic Conference, Texas Southern.
The visitors lost their season-opener, 72-59, Saturday at Baylor, and will bring an 0-1 record into the Tuesday night game. The Tigers put three players in double figures in that loss, with Lionel Willis leading the way with 16 points.
This also will be the final game of a quick two-game, season-opening home stand for the Golden Eagles, who won their opener, 79-67, against Alcorn State.
Look for Head Coach James Green to go with the same lineup that started the Alcorn State game, including Dante Stiggers and Jason Forte at the guards, the Johnsons, Greg and Jasper, at the forwards and Charles Gaines at center.
In the Alcorn opener, Southern Miss used balanced scoring, putting four players in double figures, to beat the Braves. Sophomore forward/guard Jasper Johnson led the Golden Eagle group with 18 points and nine rebounds. Forte added 13, Clement Carter 12, and Greg Johnson 10. Last season's leading scorer, Gaines, had nine points, but led his team in rebounding, with 10, and Stiggers also recorded a double-digit assist game, with a game-high 10.
The Golden Eagles shot a blistering .593 (16-27) from the field in the first half, and finished at .491 (27-55). The Southern Miss defense also limited the visitors to just .371 (26-70) shooting, with DeAndre Jones leading all scorers with 21 points.
Southern Miss and Texas Southern have played just once prior to tonight's game, a Dec. 23, 1996 game also played in Green Coliseum, won by the Golden Eagles, 56-51.
Following tonight's game, the Eagles now will play five of the next seven games on the road, starting with a Nov. 29, game at Murray State.
