HATTISBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss Head Men's Basketball Coach Larry Eustachy has announced the signing of Vitor Alves Benite of Sao Paulo, Brazil to a national letter of intent and grant-in-aid for the 2008-09 academic year.

Benite, a 6-3, 185-pound guard, has been a member-as well as captain-of the Brazilian national team for the last two seasons. Last year, during the South American Tournament in Venezuela, he led the team in scoring, averaging 17.5 points a game over five games.

He has also led Bandeirantes Rio Claro to the State Championship the last three years, earning Most Valuable Player honors in 2005 and 2007 while leading his team in scoring both years.

This past year, Benite was part of the Brazilian squad that took part in the USA Basketball Youth Development Festival in Colorado Springs, Colo. Over three games, Benite was the highest three-point scorer for the tournament.

In 2006, he captained the Sao Paulo State squad to the Brazil championship. A year later, he was named Most Valuable Player and three-point contest winner of the Adidas Camp Latin America.
