Basketball Returns to Court Against William Carey

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss basketball team returns to the hardwood with a home game against William Carey on Monday, Nov. 23 at Reed Green Coliseum at 7:00 p.m. The game will be Dollar Night for the Golden Eagles. All bleacher seats will be $1 and hot dogs will also be $1.

Southern Miss (0-2) will host William Carey (2-3) for the 10th time in the two team's histories. The Golden Eagles hold a 9-0 (1.000) record in the series with each game taking place at Reed Green Coliseum.

Southern Miss turned a four-point halftime lead into a 23-point victory, defeating William Carey, 86-63, Friday evening in its season-opener from Reed Green Coliseum.

Four of the previous matchups resulted in the Golden Eagles recording 90 or more points with an additional three games of 86 or more points.

USM recorded 90 or more points in the first three meetings of the series notching a 91-59 win in the first game of the series in 2003, a 90-46 win in 2004 and a 90-57 victory in 2005. Southern Miss scored a series-best 99 points in a 99-54 victory over the Crusaders in 2013.

The largest margin of victory came in 2013 with a 45-point margin, while the smallest decision came in 2009 as the Golden Eagles posted a 74-57 win. The fewest points scored by Southern Miss in the series was 69 in a 69-44 win in 2008.

Last season, Southern Miss turned a four-point halftime lead into a 23-point victory, defeating William Carey, 86-63. Four Golden Eagles -- Keljin Blevins, Eddie Davis III, Kevin Holland, and Michael O'Donnell -- saw their first action in a Southern Miss uniform in the game against the Crusaders last year. Blevins finished the game with two points and two rebounds, while Davis pulled down three boards.

William Carey is led by former Golden Eagle Steve Knight. Knight, along with Southern Miss basketball great Clarence Weatherspoon were inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame this year. At William Carey University where he is head basketball coach and athletic director, Knight has become the all-time winningest college basketball coach in Mississippi history with over 600 victories. Knight's 32nd season at Carey was his best when the Crusaders won 28, lost 3 and went a perfect 18-0 in the Southern States Conference. Knight was named NAIA National Coach of the Year. It was the ninth time he has taken Carey to the NAIA National Tournament. He played both basketball and baseball at Southern Miss, once throwing a no-hitter for the Golden Eagles. He played two seasons in the Seattle Mariners baseball organization before beginning his coaching career.
