Southern Miss Heads to Georgia for Opening Game of Progressive Legends Classic

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss men's basketball team will take to the road for the first time this season when it travels to Georgia for the opening game of the Progressive Legends Classic, Thursday, Nov. 15. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT and will be televised on FoxSportsNet and ESPN3.com.

Southern Miss and Georgia will meet for just the third time. The Golden Eagles are looking for their first-ever victory in the series, as the Bulldogs have won the previous two. Both meetings have taken place in Athens.

Southern Miss comes into Thursday night's game with a 1-0 record, having defeated Western Kentucky, 67-64, in overtime in its season-opener.

The victory gave Southern Miss its 16th straight win at home, which is the seventh longest in the country. The Golden Eagles have also won their last eight season-openers.

Michael Craig had 13 point and seven rebound and Jerrold Brooks had 13 points, five rebounds and four steals. Dwayne Davis dropped in 11 points, while Deon Edwin added a team-high eight boards to go along with seven points.

Southern Miss shot 36.7-percent (22-of-60) from the floor and held WKU to 21-of-64 (32.8%) shooting. The Golden Eagles were also 70-percent (21-of-30) from the charity stripe, while Western Kentucky connected on just 16-of-30 (53.3%). Both teams pulled down 46 rebounds. Southern Miss also had 15 steals.

Head coach Donnie Tyndall is in his first season at the helm of the Southern Miss men's basketball program. Tyndall is 1-0 (1.000) as head coach of the Golden Eagles. He has compiled a 115-85 (.575) record in seven years as a head coach.

Georgia enters Thursday night's contest with a 1-1 record. The Bulldogs fell, 68-56, on Tuesday to Youngstown State in its opening game of the Progressive Legends Classic.

UGA was led by sophomore guard Ketavious Caldwell-Pope with a game-high 27 points and a team-high six rebounds. He also had four steals.

Caldwell-Pope is tied for third in the SEC with 22.0 points per game. He is third in the conference with 4.5 steals and is tied for seventh with 3.0 three-pointers made.

Sophomore forward Nemanja Djurisic is second on the team with 8.0 points and is leading the team with 7.5 rebounds.

As a team, Georgia is connecting on just 36.3% from the field while holding the opposition to 39.5%. From three-point distance, the Bulldogs are connecting on just 28.6%, while keeping its opponents to just 24.2%. However, the Pioneers are being outrebounded by five boards per game, 40.5-to-35.5.

Head coach Mark Fox is in his fourth season at the helm of the Georgia men's basketball program, where he has compiled a 51-47 (.520) record. In his ninth year overall, Fox has compiled a 174-90 (.659) record.
