Southern Miss defeats Spirit Express, 87-65
HATTIESBURG, Miss. ? The Southern Miss men?s basketball team closed out its preseason schedule by defeating Spirit Express, 87-65. Elvin Mims collected 19 points, 14 coming in the second half, to lead the Golden Eagles. The senior shot 7-for-12 from the field, three-for-seven from the three-point line, and collected six rebounds and four steals.
Four other Eagles scored in double figures, as Carey Rigsby came off the bench to collect 15 points (5-6 from the field). Ben Lambert finished with 12 points, Clement Carter produced 11 points and Brad Richardson added 10 points.
Spirit Express won the battle on the boards, gaining 34 rebounds to the Eagles? 32. The Christian ministry team featured Anthony Stone as the high scorer with 18 points.
David Horner and Jason Smith followed with 13 points apiece. Smith claimed the high in rebounding with 11 caroms. Corrie Gallaway finished with 11 points.
The Eagles poured on the point production in the second half, outscoring the Express, 52-28. Shooting a 51.5 second-half field goal percentage, Southern Miss improved its overall shooting for the game to 47.7 percent.
Southern Miss shot 43.8 percent from the field in the first half, while Spirit Express hit 60.9 percent to lead 37-35 at the half. Marcus Williams banged a perfect 3-for-3 from the three-point arch, sharing the high score with Stone at nine points each.
Carter and Brandon Gay collected seven points apiece to lead the Golden Eagles in the opening period. Spirit Express won the battle of the boards in the first half, grabbing 20 rebounds to USM?s 12.
Southern Miss opens the regular season hosting Jackson State on Saturday, Nov. 17, at 7 p.m., in Reed Green Coliseum.
