HATTIESBURG, Miss. -
Heading into Saturday's regular-season opener for the 2006-07 men's basketball season, Southern Miss is experiencing brisk season ticket sales heading into the year.
"There has been a buzz about basketball in the ticket office this fall in the calls that we have received and people that have come in to purchase tickets," said Shane Coghlan, Southern Miss Associate Director of Athletics/Internal Affairs. "We are ahead of where we were last season (for tickets), and there is definitely a lot of interest and enthusiasm from our fans regarding our men's basketball program heading into this season."
Coghlan reports that season ticket sales are 100 more from the amount sold at this point last year and that there has been a 95 percent renewal rate from season ticket holders from last season.
"I really appreciate the loyalty of our fans, because we have struggled some the last two years," said third-year coach Larry Eustachy. "It only confirms what I have always believed about this job and that it is a gold mine in regards to its fan base. There is a history of basketball here, and the fans are very knowledgeable. They understand (the strength) of our recruiting class.
"Although they are young, they show a lot of promise and our fans are going to be on the bottom floor of what I think is going to be something special."
Individuals can still purchase season tickets by visiting the Southern Miss Athletic Ticket Office from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, or by either calling 1-800-844-TICK, or going to SouthernMiss.com.
Southern Miss won both of its exhibition games, defeating Lithuania Academy, 81-52, and Loyola of New Orleans, 87-67.
The regular-season opener is slated for Saturday (Nov. 11), at 7:30 p.m., against Belhaven in Green Coliseum.
