Southern Miss Loses at The Buzzer to Global Sports, 78-77
HATTIESBURG, Miss. Ė A three-pointer at the buzzer by Jason Flanagan gave Global Sports a 78-77 win over the Southern Miss menís basketball team in an exhibition game this evening at Reed Green Coliseum. The Golden Eagles never trailed in the second half until Flanagan hoisted his trey at the end of the game.
Senior forward Elvin Mims claimed high scoring honors on the night, leading the Eagles with 21 points and grabbing eight rebounds. Three more Eagles reached double figures in scoring, as junior center Ben Lambert had 16 points, senior guard Pete Meneses scored 12 and senior guard Bernard Duncan finished with 11.
Marvin Rodgers led Global Sports with 19 points. Anthony Evans recorded a double-double with 17 points and 14 rebounds. Flanagan added 15, and Terquin Mott put in 10.
The visiting All-Stars enjoyed a hefty advantage on the boards, winning that battle 42-29. Evans' 14 led both teams and Mims' eight topped the Golden Eagle effort.
Southern Miss held a 60-49 second-half lead with 12:43 remaining after Meneses put in his second three-pointer of the game. But, Global Sport whittled into the Golden Eagle advantage, going on a 15-5 run to pull within one, 63-62, at 9:57. The Eagles kept Global at bay, building the lead to seven, 71-64, with less than five minutes remaining in the game.
Global kept fighting, pulling within two points on two occasions with under a minute remaining. The all-star squad tied the score at 75-75, when Evans popped a two with :23 seconds left.
The Eagles appeared to have the victory in hand as freshman guard Dante Stiggers scored in the paint with two seconds on the clock. But, Global Sport claimed its only, and the final, lead off Flanaganís buzzer-beater.
Southern Miss held a 48-33 halftime lead, controlling the latter part of the period. Despite four lead changes, the Golden Eagles captured the lead at 12:21 with a 14-13 advantage and never relinquished the first-half advantage.
Duncan led the Eagles at intermission with 11 points. Evans produced nine in the first half to lead Global Sports.
The Golden Eagles return to action on Wednesday, Nov. 14, at 7 p.m., hosting Spirit Express in USMís final exhibition game. The regular-season opener will be held on Saturday, Nov. 17, at 7 p.m., as Southern Miss faces Jackson State.
