Basketball Eagles To Scrimmage Saturday
Hattiesburg, Miss. - As part of the upcoming weekend's homecoming activities, Southern Miss fans can get a preseason look at the basketball Golden Eagles when Head Coach James Green's men's basketball team scrimmages from 10:30 until noon Saturday in Green Coliseum. That will leave fans plenty of time to make the 2 p.m., football game against Houston.
The game-condition scrimmage is open to the public. There is no admission charge.
The Golden Eagles are coming off a 22-9 season that saw them capture their first Conference USA title, along with the number two seed in the league tournament. In addition, Green earned coach-of-the-year honors from his league counterparts, center Vandarel Jones was voted the C-USA defensive player-of-the-year and the Eagles played in postseason competition for the second time in Green's Southern Miss tenure.
Southern Miss returns two starters from that team, in Mario Myles and Kilavorus Thompson. Thompson is not expected to play this season after suffering a knee injury while playing summer league basketball. Miles averaged 6.1 points a game, while starting 29 of 31 games. Those numbers include his best game of the season when he scored a team-best 20 points in a season-ending NIT loss at Mississippi State. The leading returning scorer is forward Elvin Mims who played in 30 games, while averaging 10 points and 5.4 rebounds a game. Point guard Brad Richardson also returns after playing in all 31 games and averaging 5.9 points and almost two assists a game.
Other key returning players include guard Pete Meneses (3.7 ppg), Clement Carter (2.7 ppg) and Bernard Duncan (2.6 ppg). In addition, Green and his staff also have brought in an outstanding group of first-year players and an Oct. 20 scrimmage left Green impressed with the progress his team had made in its first week of work.
