HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss senior forward Gary Flowers has been named to the Conference USA Preseason First Team in a vote by the league's 12 coaches, the league office announced Wednesday afternoon. Flowers, who was named Second Team all-conference last year, is the first Golden Eagle to be named to the team since Jeremy Wise in 2007.
Flowers led the Golden Eagles with 15.0 points and 8.3 rebounds, good for tenth and sixth in the league. He was also fourth in C-USA in blocks with 1.8. His 60 blocks on the year tied for the seventh most in a season at Southern Miss.
The Dallas, Texas native has scored in double-figures in 29 of 33 games, including 13 straight to end the year. He scored 20-plus points in five games, including a season-high 25 at UAB on January 20. He also had 11 double-doubles on the year, fourth most in Conference USA.
Flowers is one of four seniors named to the preseason all-conference first team. Joining him is UTEP guard Randy Culpepper, who was named the Preseason Player of the Year after earning the award last year, as well as Justin Hurtt of Tulsa and Brock Young of East Carolina. The lone junior is Memphis' Wesley Witherspoon.
The second team comprised of Memphis' Will Barton, SMU's Papa Dia, Aaron Johnson of UAB, Rice's Arsalan Kazemi and Jeremy Williams of UTEP.
Flowers will join his teammates when they open practice this Friday, Oct. 15. The Golden Eagles will play their only exhibition game on Nov. 4 against cross-town rival William Carey.
