Men's Basketball Holds First Practice

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss men's basketball team held its first practice Friday night in preparation for the 2012-13 season.
The Golden Eagles return just four letterwinners from last year's team that went 25-9 and made the NCAA Tournament.
Head Coach Donnie Tyndall begins his first season at the helm of the Golden Eagles. Southern Miss returns just 37.3-percent of its scoring and 36.9-percent of its rebounding.
Southern Miss will be led by Preseason Second Team All-Conference USA selection Neil Watson. The junior guard was the team's leading scorer last year with at 12.3 points. He was also second in Conference USA with 4.6 assists per game and an 84.3 free throw percentage.
Senior forward Jonathan Mills is the only other returning player to have played in all 34 games last year. The Third Team All-Conference USA selection averaged 9.5 points and a team-high 6.1 rebounds. Also returning for the Golden Eagles is senior guard/forward Rashard McGill and junior guard Cedric Jenkins.
Newcomers joining the Black and Gold this year include senior Dwayne Davis, junior college transfers Daveon Boardingham, Jerrold Brooks, Michael Craig and Jeff Simmons, redshirt freshman Christian Robbins and freshmen Deon Edwin, Norville Carey, and Jamie Chapman.
Southern Miss will play exhibition games on Nov. 1 against Saint Catharine's College and Nov. 6 against Charleston (W.V.) The Golden Eagles open the 2012-13 regular season on Nov. 10 versus Sun Belt Champion Western Kentucky.
