HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss men's basketball team begins preparations for the 2006-07 season with its first official full-team practice Friday at 7 p.m. in Reed Green Coliseum.
The Golden Eagles feature four returning players including senior Kyle Lamonte (Davenport, Iowa), along with sophomores Courtney Beasley (Huntsville, Ala.), a 2006 Conference USA All-Freshman team selection, Craig Craft (Raleigh, Miss.) and Donatas Visockis (Siauliai, Lithuania).
Eleven newcomers dot the roster as well, including juniors Dewayne Green (Saginaw, Mich.), Demar Dotson (Alexandria, La.) and Gjio Bain (Nassau, Bahamas). Eight fresh faces on the Golden Eagle roster are freshman and they are: Jeremy Wise (Jackson, Miss.), Hank Wierson (Ames, Iowa), Bryson Brewer (Waynesboro, Miss.), Josh Barnes (Hattiesburg, Miss.), Sai'Quon Stone (Brooklyn, N.Y.), Jarvis Hill (Starkville, Miss.), Andre Stephens (Heidelberg, Miss.) and Maros Zuffa (Bratislava, Slovakia).
This will not be the first practice for this group as the team had 10 practice days earlier this fall in preparation for an exhibition tour they took to Nassau, Bahamas. The Golden Eagles won both of its games in the Bahamas and many of the younger players got their first taste of competition at this level.
The Golden Eagles also practice at 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Green Coliseum and the public is invited to that workout.
Under third-year coach Larry Eustachy, the Golden Eagles open the exhibition slate Oct. 28 in a 2 p.m. contest against the Lithuania Academy.
