Jeremy Wise Chosen to C-USA Preseason All-Conference Team; Golden Eagles Chosen to Finish Fourth

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss was picked to finish fourth in the men's basketball race of Conference USA, while sophomore Jeremy Wise (Jackson, Miss.) garnered preseason all-league honors in a vote by the 12 member coaches in a release today by the league office.

Southern Miss comes off its first 20-win season (20-11) under fourth-year coach Larry Eustachy and the Golden Eagles finished tied for fourth last season in C-USA action with a 9-7 mark. It was the first 20-win season for the school since 2000-01 as Southern Miss also captured a school-best 16 victories in a season in its home venue of Reed Green Coliseum.

As for Wise, he was on the All-Conference USA second team as a freshman, while earning C-USA Freshman and Newcomer of the Year honors, a year ago. Wise, and classmate Sai'Quon Stone, were the team's top two scorers last season with 17.3 and 10.3 points per game averages, respectively, in their rookie campaigns.

Wise also earned freshman All-American honors by, as well as being named the High-Major Freshman of the Year by en route to scoring more points that any Southern Miss freshman (541) in its history.

Memphis was chosen to repeat as the unanimous preseason favorite to win the 2007-08 C-USA men's basketball regular-season crown. The Tigers' Chris Douglas-Roberts, a preseason All-America candidate, was the unanimous selection by coaches as the preseason Player of the Year. Joining Douglas-Roberts and Wise on the preseason team were Paul Delaney III of UAB, Joey Dorsey of Memphis and Robert McKiver of Houston.

In the preseason poll as voted on by the coaches, Houston and UAB were projected to finish tied for second behind Memphis, followed by the Golden Eagles, Tulsa, UCF, Tulane, UTEP, Marshall, SMU, Rice and East Carolina.

Memphis will serve as host city for the 2008 Conference USA Championship, March 12-15 at the state-of-the-art FedExForum. The championship game is slated for Saturday, March 15 at 11:35 a.m. EST/10:35 a.m. CST on CBS.

The Golden Eagles open preseason play Nov. 2, when they entertain Loyola (New Orleans) in a 7 p.m., exhibition contest at Reed Green Coliseum.
