Men's Basketball holds first official practice of 2017-18 season
HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Fall came to Hattiesburg two weeks ago, and on Monday, the Southern Miss men's basketball team laced up its shoes for the first official practice of the 2017-18 season.
"Now's the grind for a lot of people," head coach Doc Sadler said. "A lot of people think it's now until the first game, but when you coach, I think the first day of practice should be, and is, the most exciting day. I'm very, very excited. After 35 years of this, if you're not excited, you should be doing something else. I'm looking forward to this year."
This past August, the squad took a trip to the Bahamas where it played three games as part of an NCAA allowance of one international trip every four years. Considering that six of the 14 players on this year's squad have yet to play for the Golden Eagles, it was a welcome time to run them through the offensive and defensive schemes.
"I think more than anything, with all three games we showed we can score the basketball a little better than in the past," Sadler said. "That's always been a problem for us. You get down to a four or five-point ballgame late, everybody knows what everyone will run. You need someone else who can score. I think we have more options there."
This year's team features one senior in Holmes CC product D'Angelo Richardson, as well as one freshman, LaDavius Draine (Calhoun City, Miss.). Eight players classify as juniors, including talented transfers Dominic Magee and Tyree Griffin, both of whom have significant resumes and who produced well in the Bahamas.
