HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss announced Tuesday the addition of Greg Heiar to an assistant basketball coach position pending the approval by the Board of Trustees, Institute of Higher Learning.
Heiar will take over for Nate Loenser, who moved into the role of Director of Basketball Operations. Loenser takes over for Billy Reid, who left the program earlier this month.
"We are pleased to have Greg join our staff," said Southern Miss basketball coach Larry Eustachy. "He is one of the top up and coming coaches, and is ahead of his time. He will add a new dimension to what I feel is already a great coaching staff."
Heiar comes to Southern Miss after spending the last six years at Chipola (Fla.) Junior College, the last five as the head coach. While at Chipola, Heiar led the Indians to a 164-15 record. He has coached 40 All-Conference players and sent 39 players to Division I schools. He was named the Panhandle Conference Coach of the Year the last five years, and has earned NJCAA Region VIII Coach of the Year four of the last five years.
Last year, Heiar led Chipola to a 35-2 record and its fifth-consecutive Panhandle Conference Championship. The Indians then earned a third-place finish in the NJCAA National Tournament, their fourth appearance in the last five years in the National Tournament.
As a player, Heiar earned second-team All-Region honors at Kirkwood Community College after leading his team to the National Tournament for the first time in school history. That year, he helped to guide his team to a 25-10 record and a conference championship.
Heiar spent his final two years at Franciscan University, where he was twice named team captain and earned team Most Valuable Player accolades. He was also named first team All-Conference, after leading Franciscan to its first ever MCC Conference title.
Heiar and his wife, Jessica, have a seven year-old daughter, Alexis.
