HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss men's basketball player Bryson Brewer was one of 12 recipients of the Jim Castaneda Postgraduate Scholarship, announced today by Conference USA Commissioner Britton Banowsky in Irving, Texas.
This is the second year the award has been named for Dr. Castañeda, who served Rice University for 46 years as an educator, coach and Faculty Athletics Representative before he passed away in November 2008. The conference annually presents the $4,000 Postgraduate Scholarship awards to graduates as selected by the C-USA Faculty Athletics Representatives and approved by the Board of Directors.
Brewer was a four-year letterwinner for the Golden Eagles, while excelling in the classroom. His efforts included maintaining a perfect 4.0 grade point average every semester and earning C-USA Academic Medalist and President's List honors each year. The Waynesboro, Miss., native was also a member of the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society, Phi Kappa Phi Golden Key and Society of Physics Students. Brewer will be attending the Vanderbilt School of Engineering Graduate Program in Mechanical Engineering this fall.
