Southern Miss Basketball Signs Rashaad Carruth
HATTIESBURG, Miss.? Southern Miss Head Basketball Coach Larry Eustachy has announced the signing of Rashaad Carruth, a 6-3, 195-pound guard from Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa, Iowa, to a national letter of intent for the 2004-05 academic year. This marks the first signee of the spring signing period and the first signee of the Eustachy era.
Carruth was a standout guard for Coach Lorenzo Watkins at Indian Hills, where he helped lead the Warriors to a final record of 22-9 and an appearance in the NJCAA Region XI Tournament.
The College Park, Ga., native led the team in scoring with 517 points (17.8 ppg) and was fourth on the team with 51 assists. He also had a season-high 26 points, grabbed 82 total rebounds and finished with 22 steals.
"We are excited about Rashaad and what he brings to the Southern Miss program," Eustachy said. "He had a good year at Indian Hills last season, and he is quite a talent. We think he'll be one of the better talents in the league, and he is exactly what we need for our program."
Carruth was a McDonald's and Parade All-American honoree during his senior year at Oak Hill (Va.) Academy, where he led the team to a perfect 33-0 record and a 30-2 mark as a junior, pacing all scorers during the two years. Following high school, Carruth attended the University of Kentucky and Oklahoma University, prior to attending Indian Hills.
Carruth becomes the second signee for the 2004 signing class. The Golden Eagles signed Henry Salter (Gulfport, Miss.), a 6-foot-4 forward from Gulfport High School, during the fall signing period.
