Statement from Director of Athletics Bill McGillis Regarding the Men's Basketball Program
April 22, 2014
Dear Golden Eagles:
As you are likely aware, Coach Tyndall informed me early this morning that he has accepted the position of head men's basketball coach at the University of Tennessee. He and I subsequently met with the young men in our basketball program at 6:15 a.m. and shared his decision with them.
Please know that I am very appreciative of the professional manner in which Coach Tyndall handled this transition and opportunity, but, more importantly, grateful for the two amazing years of leadership he provided Southern Miss. He and his staff have poured their heart and soul into our basketball program and community, and, together with our players, have brought great joy to many.
As I shared with the young men in our program this morning, we are very well positioned to enjoy continued competitive excellence in men's basketball. We have an outstanding group of returning players, a number of very talented incoming student-athletes, a great tradition, a passionate fan base, and more - the foundation for success remains in place.
Our search for the next head men's basketball coach at Southern Miss has already begun, and I am certain the opportunity to serve as our head coach will attract a strong and diverse pool of candidates. This is considered to be a very good coaching position, and it will be highly sought after. We are one of only eight schools in America to win 25 plus games each of the last three years and one of only 20 schools to have won 20 plus games each of the last five years. We have an environment conducive to winning, to graduating young men, and coaches throughout the country recognize this.
We are committed to identifying and hiring a leader of young men to serve as our head coach; someone whose values match those of the university and community; who is committed to the well-being and academic success of the young men in the basketball program; who has demonstrated a record of success as either an assistant or head coach; who is a great teacher of the game; who brings a style of play which will excite our fan base; who is relentless in recruiting and who is outstanding in developing talent. We are also committed to hiring a head coach who will engage our community and who is genuinely passionate about being at Southern Miss.
We will hire a winner!
Thank you for your tremendous support of our program!
