HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss will host third-seeded BYU this Wednesday, March 27, in the quarterfinals of the NIT, at Reed Green Coliseum. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT and will be televised by ESPNU.
This will be the first-ever meeting between Southern Miss and BYU.
Southern Miss comes into tonight's NIT quarterfinal with a 27-9 record. The Golden Eagles are coming off a 63-52 victory over fifth-seeded Louisiana Tech in the second round, on Monday.
Senior guard Dwayne Davis had 13 points and seven rebounds to lead the Golden Eagles. Junior guard Jerrold Brooks also had 13 points. Senior guard Rashard McGill and senior forward Jonathan Mills each added 10 points and eight rebounds.
Davis is leading the team with 16.3 points, which is sixth in Conference USA. He is also pulling down 4.5 rebounds and is sixth in the league in three point field goal percentage, hitting 42.8% and ninth in the league in free throw percentage, connecting on 79.4%. Brooks is second on the team with 10.8 points. Junior guard Neil Watson is averaging 9.8 points and is third in the league in steals (1.8) and three-point field goal percentage (.448) and fourth in assists (4.9). Mills is scoring 9.4 points and is grabbing 7.8 boards a game, which is eighth in the conference, including 3.5 offensive rebounds per game, which is second in C-USA. He is also eighth in the league in field goal percentage (.518).
Southern Miss is scoring 74.2 points per game but allowing just 63.0, which is third in Conference USA. The Golden Eagles are shooting 48.3-percent from the floor, which leads the league and is ninth in the NCAA, while allowing their opponents to hit just 40.8-percent. The Golden Eagles lead C-USA in three-point field goal percentage (.384) and are third in three-point field goal percentage defense (.327). Southern Miss is also outrebounding its opponents, 35.6-to-29.7. The Golden Eagles are also leading the league and are fifth in the country in steals with 9.7.
Head coach Donnie Tyndall is in his first season at the helm of the Southern Miss men's basketball program. Tyndall is 27-9 (.750) as head coach of the Golden Eagles. He has compiled a 141-94 (.600) record in seven years as a head coach.
BYU enters the NIT quarterfinals with a 23-11 record. The Cougars are coming off a 90-71 victory over seventh-seeded Mercer, Monday night.
Senior forward Brandon Davies led BYU with 26 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore guard Tyler Haws scored 24 points. Sophomore guard Matt Carlino had 18 points, nine assists and six rebounds and senior guard Brock Zylstra added 14 points and six boards.
Haws, who was named First Team All-West Coast Conference, leads the league and is 10th in the country with 21.5 points. He is also second in free throw percentage (.876), third in minutes played (34.1) and ninth in field goal percentage (.479). Davies is fourth in the WCC in points (18.0), third in rebounding (7.9) and fifth in field goal percentage (.530). Carlino is scoring 11.2 points while placing third in the conference in steals (1.9) and fifth in assists (4.6).
As a team, the Cougars lead the league in scoring with 77.3 points per game but are allowing 69.5. BYU is connecting on 45.8% from the field and is holding the opposition to just 42.3%, which is third in the league. The Cougars are connecting on 33.8% from three, and are allowing 3.4%. BYU is also outrebounding its opponents, 38.6-to-34.9. It also leads the conference in free throw percentage (.728), assists (15.9) and steals (8.4).
Head coach Dave Rose is in his eighth season at the helm of the BYU men's basketball program, where he has compiled a 208-65 (.762) overall record.
