Southern Miss to Decline Invitations to College Basketball Invitational and Tournament

March 13, 2011

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss men's basketball team has decided to decline invitations to both the College Basketball Invitational and the Postseason Tournament.

"Obviously, we're disappointed," said head coach Larry Eustachy. "I know we are one of the top 100 basketball teams in the country, and we feel like we deserve to at least be playing in the NIT. We have been offered to be one seeds by both tournaments. However, we have missed too much school as it is, so we have decided to respectfully decline their invitations. Academics always come first, so we will look toward graduation, and then turn our attention to next season."

The Golden Eagles end the year with a 22-10 record following a 66-63 loss to C-USA Champion Memphis in the Quarterfinals of the Conference USA Tournament. The 22 victories are the second most since becoming a Division I institution in 1972.
