HATTIESBURG, Miss. - For the first time in 21 years, Southern Miss is heading to the NCAA Tournament.
The Golden Eagles (25-8) earned an at-large bid to the East Region as a No. 9 seed, their highest in school history. Southern Miss will take on eighth-seed Kansas State (21-10) in Pittsburgh, Pa., at the Consol Energy Center on Thursday, March 15. The game time is yet to be determined.
If USM were to defeat the Wildcats, it would face the winner of No. 1 Syracuse (31-2) and No. 16 UNC-Asheville (24-9).
This will be just Southern Miss' third NCAA appearance and its first since 1991. Southern Miss is looking for its first victory in the NCAA Tournament. It is also their 12th overall postseason appearance.
Southern Miss and Kansas State have met six times before, with each team winning three games. Kansas State has won the last two, including a 74-55 victory in the 2008 K-State Holiday Classic.
Kansas State comes into the tournament having won four of its last six games. The Wildcats fell in the Quarterfinals of the Big XII Tournament, 82-74 to No. 11 Baylor.
